課程概述

This course introduces students to the development of English literature,1603-1785. At the centre of this course lies a balanced outlook on this period as one of political and religious conflicts, of intellectual and scientific developments, and of literary and cultural sophistication. Students will read from a wide range of genres/writers and will be encouraged, simultaneously, to consider the intrinsic merits of texts and to read a given text in relation to its historical and social contexts.

課程目標
By the end of this course, students will gain a basic understanding of the main genres and the larger thematic concerns of literature produced in this period.
